Minutes

Total Clubs – 25
Total Judges – 1
Total Coaches – 28

Saturday, June 9th, 2001 Meeting called to order at 10:15am – Kevin Muenz (State Chairman)

1.)                 Texas In Review
·        5 – Elite State Championships
Meet went well, much higher numbers this year than the previous year

·        6 & 7 State Championships
Meet went well, some paper work problems (entry forms). Coaches, entry forms need to be accurate!

2.)                 Region 3 In Review – Gil Elsass
·        Region 3 Championships
Alamo did a great job! Region 3 has a dilemma. Region 3 would like to have a large, profitable Regional Championship, but not too large to run. If qualifying scores were raised one to two points, Texas would have lost several qualifiers.
·        Internet Updates
Coaches must check the internet and make updates! Our regional website is fantastic but
The updates must be sent to stay current. Whenever updates are sent, Gil block emails everyone.
If you have changes, email both Kevin Muenz and Gil Elsass at the same time!
·        Entry & Petition Forms
There is now an interactive entry and petition form. J.O.P.C. has authorized an update of
the Rules and Policies. Get on the web and  print out the update!
·        Nationals & the New Vaulting Table
The J.O.P.C. is considering the use of only the new Vault table at 3,2,1 Nationals, however
Regionals will have the old Vault Horse and the new Vaulting Table. The Vault table/horse decision will be left up to the Meet Director at State Championships.
·        Speith Vault Training Table
The new Speith Anderson Training Vault Table is NOT intended for competition use. Speith is now working on changes for competitive use.
·        Academic All American
April 1 is the deadline for Academic All American
·        Locations for National Championships
2002 J.O. Nationals will be held in San Diego, California
2003 J.O. Nationals will be held in Savannah, Georgia
·        Qualification Scores
Qualification score are to be changed at Congress in Philadelphia (Not a radical change)
·        Open Optionals
Gil proposed to the J.O.P.C. to adjust the rules for the Open Optional division. He received a great response, but was overturned in the vote. Gil also proposed a “Open Optional Nationals” but was also turned down on this issue. Gil does believe that a gym did decide to host an “Open Optional Nationals” there would be good attendance and great gymnastics! The J.O.P.C. told Gil to go back and restructure and re-present it.
·        Stirrup Pants at International Competitions
Gymnasts competing in International Competitions must wear light colored stirrup pants (not at J.O.)
·        Regional Qualification Scores
Qualification scores for 5,4,3,2,1 Regionals should be available and posted at this time. Check it out at             www.region3men.org

·        Location for 2002 Regionals
2002 Regional 3 Championships will be in Norman, Oklahoma – Held in conjunction with NCAA’s. Regionals will start that Friday, April 5th (older boys would otherwise miss school at Regionals and then a month later at Nationals).

3.)                 High School Gymnastics Update – J.T. Fletcher
·        Texas High School Gymnastics Numbers
Texas had 45 registered teams this past year, possibly the size of 6 & 7 State! 38 Teams had club boys, a few had all club kids. Texas had 120 boys in competitive high school gymnastics this past year. Texas routines are clearly better than the rest.
·        Texas High School Judging
10 coaches are active High School Judges, 2 are T.G.J.A and N.G.J.A.
·         Promoting High School Gymnastics
We are asking for club coaches to help promote HIGH SCHOOL GYMNASTICS. Let’s recruit more Kids!
·         2002 Texas High School State Championships
State Championships for Texas High School Gymnastics will be held on Saturday, April 20th. No conflicts at this time.
·         New Rules
H.S. Gymnastics trying to bring rules closer to the J.O. rules
·         High School Scholarships
Last year Texas gave 2 $500 scholarships to High School Seniors. Proposed to double the amount. Mark Sherman is online for High School Gymnastics information mslexus1@airmail.net
Comment: (Kevin Muenz) The reason why Texas gymnasts are so successful is because the coaches and judges work together!
4.)             Judging Update – Mark Sherman
·         Texas Judges
No doubt Texas has the best judges because we get to see the best gymnasts and that is because we also have the best coaches. Texas now has 8 Brevet Judges. Pat Fallin named National Apparatus Leader on Pommel Horse and Mark Sherman  is the Sr NAL on Pommel Horse. 73 people in attendance at this past judges course.
·         Judges Cup
Help support the Judges Cup! This competition is designed as not only a competition but also as and educational experience for both coaches and gymnasts. This is an interactive competition where coaches can ask questions to better their gymnasts, it is extremely educational! This competition is held to help raise money to send Texas judges to judge at National competitions.
·         “Kick It” Coed Competition
This is a new competition being held to help raise money for Breast Cancer Research. This is an extremely important cause and an outstanding competition. Let’s show our support
